Soft concrete 3D-printed white tower surfaces

The Digital Building Technologies group at ETH Zurich is developing the tower’s technology in collaboration with the Institute of Structural Analysis and Design (CSBD) and the Institute of Building Materials (PCBM) in the context of the National Competence Center Digital Fabrication. Based on the timeline that Michael Hansmeyer detailed, the 3D-printed White Tower is set to have its columns assembled in May 2024, with a June 2024 expected date of Tor Alva’s opening.

The 3D-printed white Tower in the Making

 

3D printing is the main tool used to realize the architecture of the White Tower. Soft concrete is the main ingredient. As the robot sprays thin layers of concrete through the nozzle, the robot instinctively directs the material to form hollow geometric columns up to a certain height. Soft concrete is malleable, allowing it to be molded into homogeneous components. Once it has hardened, which happens quite quickly, the material supports the successively layered extrusion. The design team claims that the 3D printing method can reduce carbon emissions during production by saving mass and cement.

The White Tower, at 30 meters tall, including its base, may be the tallest 3D printed building in the entire world. The design team is proud to point out that the formwork is absent, as the concrete isn’t poured into the 3D printer but rather extruded in strips by a robotic arm. Dismantling the 3D printed White Tower is easy. The design team may have this in mind, as they may decide to rebuild Tor Alva elsewhere after it has served its five-year lifespan in the Swiss Alps. The modular design of the architecture makes it easy to assemble and disassemble the individual components, and then reassemble them using removable screws.

Tor Alva, a 3D-printed cultural and artistic space

 

Diving into the project’s background, the 3D-printed White Tower or Tor Alva is expected to rise at 30 meters along the Julien mountain in the remote village of Mulegns, Switzerland. It is designed to be a space that can host art installations, theater performances, and music. The newly printed hollow columns echo central interior of the architecture. The facade is windowless and open with the crisscross structure that comes from the 3D printing. The White Tower is a byproduct of computational designing, digital fabrication and structural engineering. It gradually emerged from the use soft concrete extrusion.

The 3D-printed White Tower has an installational character from the start. If this is your first thought, then using it as a place for intimate concerts, art events, and cultural mediation will be complementary. Tor Alva is a design that consists of 32 columns that wrap themselves around a series abstract and atmospheric rooms. The visitors ascend the vertical staircases from the ground and, once they reach their destination, the vaulted venue with panoramic views of the Julier Valley greets them. The design team says that the White Tower’s characteristics are reminiscent of the craftsmanship of the master builders of the Baroque era in Grison, brought to life again by 3D printing.
